STATEMENT
In the process of repetition I seek to engage the absolutely literal with a visual language that is universal and discover experiences that are rhythmic, meditative, and transformative. Using written text, a system of communication with its own set of conventions, I intend to push words into another form of expression bound by no singular language. My work highlights themes of repetition, tradition, accumulation and memory.
In the “LISTEN” series, the chair becomes a metaphor for the person that sits as the listener and the sitter whose story is being shared. These chairs sometimes reference a specific time or generation and parts may appear to dissolve, become erased, or less clear at points, similar to the memory that we carry and recall of those stories told
BIO
Cameron Schmitz received quite classical art training, studying painting and art history in Florence, Italy and then a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from the University of New Hampshire, and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the oldest art school in the country.
After an inspiring artists residency at Vermont Studio Center in 2006, she moved to Vermont. In 2007 she was one of 3 artists from the U.S.A represented in an international exhibition in Kyoto, Japan at Seika University. Most recently, she was included at Fitchburg Art Museum’s biannual “New England New Talent” exhibition that represented only 13 artists from around New England. Schmitz continues to exhibit her work in various venues along the Northeast and has her work, including commissions, in private collections in Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Washington, D.C., and Florida.
