STATEMENT
Maggie Standley's work is distinguished by exquisite color, rich texture, graceful shapes and, at times, understated lipstick kisses. Her paintings contain elements of drawing, writing, collage and found object assemblage. Visual symphonies leap from their surfaces. She begins by writing in graphite pencil, often marking the surface violently and spastically with words, poems, songs that come to her. She embarks on a self-healing ritual, a private and powerful process. The shapes of the letters create lines of a map around which and within oil paint is applied and removed. First thinly, then thickly, creating layers of texture, layers of her story. She uses brush, blades, fingers, forks.
Maggie grew up all over the country in precarious households. She has been determined to create a different world for herself as evidenced by her powerful and inspring paintings. She is an avid advocate of the transformative power of art and art-making and works as an artist and instructor for this purpose.
BIO
Maggie Standley is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Burlington, Vermont. Her dynamic paintings contain elements of drawing, writing, collage and found object assemblage. Maggie has been an Artist-in-Residence at several venues including The Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont, The Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont and Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland. She has received numerous grants and has been published in periodicals such as The Washington Post, Art Map Burlington and Seven Days.
