STATEMENT
Printmaking leaves me breathless. Be it intaglio, lithography or relief, every plate is an adventure, every print a surprise gift. Woodcuts are by far the most organic in quality. Unlike other techniques, the line must be coaxed out of the substrate, preserved and protected while the rest of the wood is cut away. Though the technique is theoretically simple, the process is harder physical work than most other types of printmaking. By the time I’ve completed a plate, my hand is usually numb and my fingers festooned with band-aids.

Mary Azarian is a huge influence on my work at this time. Her hand-painted prints have inspired me to follow suit. I love the combination of the bold, graphic quality of the black lines interspersed with the translucence of the watercolor. I love how every print is different, how the lines dictate the flow of color, how the color changes the impact of the line.

“Girl with Flowers” came from a 30 second sketch I slapped down of a girl with an armload of sunflowers at the Burlington Farmers Market. There was a quality to her that intrigued me and I never forgot it. It niggled at me every time I looked at that sketch. I first tried unsuccessfully to capture it in a painting. Failing there, I tried a lithograph. It wasn’t until I created her as a wood cut that I actually felt satisfied that I captured the feeling she emitted to me. There was a purity in the girl that the organic lines of the wooden plate expressed beautifully.

BIO
Marcia Blanco is an artist and commercial illustrator in Burlington, Vermont. Formally trained with a Masters of Science in biomedical illustration, studying under Tom McCracken at Colorado State University, she has spent a decade simplifying the complex to tell visual stories of complex biological concepts. She now creates to tell her own story. Her work is narrative with subject matter drawn primarily from the life around her.

Marcia is intrigued with the power and energy of lines. She loves to explore the impact, the infinite variety of thickness and length that each mark made on paper or plate has on the overall form. She now explores this through a variety of printmaking methods, playing with the diversity of style inherent in relief, intaglio and lithographic printmaking.
