STATEMENT
My work reflects the dichotomy of the world. There is delight and danger in everything. Much of my work seems happy and bright, but has a dark or warped edge when you look at it carefully. Subjects are often “inanimate” objects, children, or unpopular heroes such as monsters and the Grim Reaper. I have always cheered for the underdog. My favorite media today are acrylic, inks, and liquid watercolors. I love the flexibility and intensity of color you can get with them. Acrylic allows you to embed anything into a painting, and to work on unconventional surfaces. Watercolor and ink move across paper in beautiful, organic ways. I have had a vivid imagination my whole life. I prefer not just to think outside the box, but to put a little face and legs on the box and ask it how its day has been.
BIO
Martha Hull is a native Vermonter with a BFA in Illustration from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. She lives in Burlington and has shown her work in solo and group shows in Burlington, Boston, Waterbury, and Rutland. She took first prize at the audience-juried First Annual Diorama-o-Rama in Burlington in late 2006. Her paintings are in numerous private collections and she has done and accepts commissions for fine art and illustration.
