STATEMENT
Inspired by everyday situations and activity, Phebe Mott paints what she sees with honesty and simplicity. Injecting canvas with color and texture, she tells the story of the painting process as much as possible, without ever providing the story of the subjects themselves. Viewers are left to decide themselves what is really happening with the people before them. Who are they? How did they get here? What will they do next? By leaving the subjects faceless and painted details to a minimum, Mott provides open ends to stories, even opportunities to invite the viewers into the paintings themselves.
BIO
Phebe Mott graduated from the University of Vermont in 2000 with a BA in Studio Art. She has earned numerous awards since then, including First Prize at the 2005 Art’s Alive Festival of Fine Art and First Prize in Acrylics at the Northern Vermont Artist Association in 2007. She has also been reviewed in several publications, such as the Burlington Free Press and Art New England. Most recently, she was asked to participate as a Featured Artist at Reflections on Basin Harbor, 2008. Mott paints large-scale canvases in colorful acrylics, focusing on everyday people in everyday situations.
