STATEMENT
I work primarily with ink and acrylics on found and discarded objects, using amateur materials and abandoned matter to explore the redemptive potential inherent in social refuse. Utilizing folk methodology, rather than high art practices, enables me to approach my expectations and assumptions of what the unwanted can accomplish.
The emotional axis of my work revolves around my experience of childhood neglect and its impact on my adult ability to love. Distortion and exposure of intimate anatomy, along with fantastical characters and children, narrate my account of abuse and self-discovery. My recent work focuses on the hope that accompanies learning new ways of loving.
BIO
Tara Jensen has exhibited her paintings and illustrations in alternative social spaces along the East Coast such as Harvest Records in West Asheville, North Carolina and the Green Door Studios in Burlington, Vermont. She has also participated in group shows at Push Skate Shop in Asheville, North Carolina and the Langdon Street Café in Montpelier, Vermont.
Tara is a member of two art collectives, the Scarlet Letter Project and Segment 16. Her work can be found in the private collections across the country.
Tara was born in Naples, Maine in 1982. She currently resides in Moretown, Vermont.
