INTRODUCTION The subjects of Elizabeth Cleary’s paintings vary from people, to landscapes, to still lifes. A strong sense of lighting and color define each painting, so much so that light and color is as important to the painting as the subject. While her work tends to be highly representational, paintings often slide into a loose style where large brush strokes results in less detail but greater emotionality. Much of her landscape work done in 2003 was done in and around Stowe, Vermont. These landscapes, along with others done in later years, were all painted en plein air. They employ a technique that involves pre-mixing many different colors so that time is not wasted mixing colors while trying to capture the desired light effect. Over eighty pre-mixed colors are available to the artist at any given time, and can be directly applied to the canvas. This allows the artist to capture color and light quickly and accurately, before the sun dips behind a mountain or clouds move in and change the scene. BIO Opportunities Credit Union Elizabeth Cleary's work is on view at Opportunities Credit Union from May 21st to August 20th.
