GILLIAN KLEIN

INVENTORY

INTRODUCTION

Gillian Klein depicts ethereal urban scenes and masterfully suggests the shifting lights and crowds of her native New York City.

–Exhibition Statement, “Big Beautiful Paintings"
Firehouse Gallery, Burlington, Vermont, 2007

Born and raised in New York City, Klein lives and paints in Burlington, Vermont, where she has developed a reputation as a cityscape oil painter. Klein studied painting at the Art Institute of Florence and has exhibited her work at galleries in Vermont and Long Island as well as at numerous art fairs across the United States.

Klein’s subject is her native New York City, which she interprets not as a noisy metropolis, but as a conurbation of moods, tones, and place. Her paintings manifest a melodic hum of light and color; a sense of solitude and reflection that one only finds when in the eye of the city’s whirlwind. Crosswalks become fields of expanse; evening traffic becomes a symphony of light; and pedestrians hurrying home on a rainy afternoon become a painting.
