June 29th to August 4th, 2007
Kasini House, 64 North Street, Burlington, VT

“High above the glittering skyline of 1950's Manhattan, in her rent-free suite at the Waldorf-Astoria, the incomparable Elsa Maxwell— hostess-with-the-mostest, social power broker, and confidante to the stars*— ” created a parlor game where one seeks to find items on a list before the other players do. The scavenger hunt, in a myriad of forms, is still around today and is used by everyone from educators to online gamers. It is the inspiration behind KH10X10. Thanks, Elsa.

Karen Geiger came to the April Burlington Artist Meet-up hoping to meet some folks interested in collaborating on something. Karen has been keeping a photo journal where each day she takes a few pictures and uploads them to her Flickr site. The photo journal led her to an online group that does weekly scavenger hunts online. Participants receive a list and go out and shoot an image for each item on the list. As we all sat around in the comfy couches of Kriya Studio, we decided we should do it in Burlington. The group negotiated some rules and Kasini House agreed to exhibit the results.

At the Burlington Artist Meet-up on May 17th, ten artists each presented a one-word theme, object, concept, something. Then, over the course of a month, each artist produced ten 7"”x5” works of art based on the ten themes presented at the Meet-up.

The results of this creative scavenger hunt will be exhibited at Kasini House June 29th to August 4th.

The artists: Ian Yaple; Damien Cross; Julia Roth; Dostie; Karen M. Geiger; Kate Van Wagner; Ciaran Brennan; Brian O’Neill; Colinpatrick Charles; and introducing Ian Brennan.

The words: Repulsion, Watertower, Decade, Tools, Gun, Entrance, Plenty, Pretend, Penultimate, Engine.

The exhibition was installed by Damien Cross.

The Rules

Artists agreed to following these rules during the creative scavenger hunt.

The themes
It can be anything: a “coffeepot,” the color “orange,” “anger,” “minutes,” “crying,” or whatever as long as it’s one word.

The art
Each piece of art must be two dimensional, seven inches wide, and five inches high. Any medium (drawing, painting, photography, crayon) is acceptable, but the dimensions are non-negotiable. The final pieces must be for sale.

The deadline
Work must be finished and delivered to Kasini House by June 21st (or the Burlington Artist Meet-up that evening.)

To participate
Currently five people have expressed an interest in participating and they have agreed to bring other artists who would like to participate. The final participants will be determined at the May 17 th Burlington Artist Meet-up which will take place at Kasini House, 64 North Street. You must be present to participate.

The warning
If you agree to participate, you must complete the project by the deadline or else, in lieu of your artwork, your name and the word “sucks” will be hung on a 5”hx7”w card and put in the place of artwork.

The opening
The results will be installed in Studio A at Kasini House and an opening reception will be held on June 29th, 6PM to 9PM.
