Print and book maker Amy Wild is artist in residence at Kasini House this December. Wild is putting fantastical images of everyday chaos on textile using a traditional batik technique. Wild uses bright colors and unrealistic themes to tell stories of her and her sister. She explains, "I am doing a fictional piece about chaos in an arctic igloo village. I am using a modern batik method, treating 35" x 35" silk scarves as my pages. The pages will eventually be photographed and formed into a traditional sized comic book." Batik is done by applying wax to cloth before dying it. Thin lines are made with a canting needle. After the fabric is dyed, it is dipped into a solvent to remove the wax. Batik is a common practice in Africa and South East Asia. Contemporary batik may employ a variety of techniques including etching, stencils, and a variety of waxing, wax removing, and dyeing methods and a variety of surfaces including silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper, and ceramics. Amy Wild moved to Burlington in March 2008. She received a Bachelor's of Fine Art with a focus on printmaking and bookmaking from Denison University in 2007. She works as an instructor for Burlington City Arts. Her work is distinguished by detailed images and imaginative scenes that evoke nostalgia of childhood fantasies. Her work has been exhibited around Vermont as well as Ohio and Massachusetts. |
