Yann Novak
August 4th to August 13th, 2007

Performance & Reception
Friday, August 10th, 7PM
Kasini House, 64 North Street, Burlington, VT

Novak’s work explores the relationship between an environment and the recalled emotional impact of the environment. He records ambient noise of an environment and alters it. His compositions are both documentations and translations of his experience.

While at Kasini House, Novak explored the auditory landscape of Burlington's Old North End. At the end of his residency, Novak presented a live composition of these altered recordings, conveying the emotional impact this historic neighborhood has on him as a subtle and textured soundscape.

Novak performed his Old North End soundscape at Kasini House on Friday, August 10th, 2007. This original composition then traveled back to Seattle, Washington where it was performed as part of the 2007 Decibel Festival September 20th at The Henry Art Gallery.

Since 2003, Novak has been intensely active in sound art and music communities through performances, installations and recordings. Based in Seattle, Novak has performed at prestigious events and venues in the Pacific Northwest, including The Decibel Festival, the Henry Art Gallery, and Gallery 1412, among others. Internationally, he has performed at Blim (Vancouver, BC) and Legends (Manchester, UK). The versatile range of his work is also demonstrated by collaborations with visual artist Alex Schweder and with choreographer Crispin Spaeth, with whom he has scored three pieces: Dark Room (2006), Up Close (2005) and Fade Dis/Appearances (2005), the score of which received critical acclaim. Through these collaborations, Novak’s work has been featured at The American Academy in Rome (Rome, Italy), the TBA Festival (Portland, OR), Western Bridge (Seattle, WA), Howard House (Seattle, WA), and Suyama Space (Seattle, WA). In 2005, Novak launched Dragon’s Eye Recordings, a record label supporting a growing roster of sound artists and composers who focus on minimal electronics and art music. Novak has been reviewed in The Wire, e/i Magazine, Signal to Noise, Resonance, The Stranger, Seattle Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Seattle Weekly.

RELEASED: In Residence by Yann Novak
In Residence is the result of three residencies Novak attended in 2007. At his residency at Kasini House in Burlington, Novak composed and performed an Old North End soundscape which is included on this release along with works done at the Espy Foundation in Oysterville and the Satsop Cooling Tower in Elma, both in Washington. In In Residence, Novak pushes his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely world with distant sounds passing by the listener. The entire piece quivers with anticipation. In Residence is forty-three minutes and is available on 5” CD-R. The edition is limited to 250. MORE>>>
